2019 was a monumental year for Law and Order Special Victims Unit fans. When NBC renewed the show, they made it TV’s longest-running primetime live-action series, beating the previous record of 20 seasons set by the original Law & Order (1990-2010) and Gunsmoke (1955-75).
“We tip our cap to Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of SVU, who now all go into the record book,” said Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment at the time (via Deadline).
“This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way. We couldn’t be more proud of this remarkable achievement.”
Hargitay’s Lt Benson also become the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series, beating Gunsmoke's James Arness and Milburn Stone, and Kelsey Grammer, who all portrayed the same character for 20 consecutive seasons (Grammer’s record came from a combination of Frasier and Cheers, which feels like cheating to us, but whatever).
So, season 21 was big for record-breaking reasons, but how’s it doing in the ratings? Well, it’s early days right now, but they’re not looking good. So far, 21 has seen a 0.73 rating in the 18-49 demographic, from 3.64 million viewers. Compared to season 20, that’s a fairly big drop – by 15% and 13%, respectively.
But, until the show’s officially cancelled (and if everyone’s happy to carry on making it, why wouldn’t they put that record as far out of sight for competitors as possible?) we have hope, and there’s every chance that season 21 will have the kind of awards run broadcasters like to build on (in 2006 Hargitay won the first Emmy for any regular on a Law and Order series).
